Physical Education (P.E.)

“We aim to develop active and healthy lifestyles for every child. Through exciting and challenging lessons and enrichment activities, we strive to instil a love of games and sport that will last a lifetime.”

Physical education and encouraging healthy lifestyles are an important aspect of life at Shireland Technology Primary School. We recognise the many benefits that an active lifestyle can bring, including the many positive benefits to health and wellbeing.

Through our P.E. provision, our aim is that all children will be passionate about sport and have the skills they need to go on to lead healthy, active lifestyles both during their time at school and beyond.

We do this by engaging all children in a wide variety of sports to develop their physical skills in a range of situations, including agility, balance and co-ordination, as well as communication skills, teamwork, leadership, resilience, determination, the ability to think strategically in competitive situations and to develop their self-belief and self-awareness.

For our taught PE, we follow a PE teaching programme called ‘Champions!’. Champions is a Sports, Fitness and Health programme for Years 1 to 6. It is a holistic approach to teaching PE, which improves fitness, develops skills and deepens knowledge of health and wellbeing. The scope and sequence for Champions ensures that progression is built-in across the whole school. The programme incorporates three strands: Sport, Health and Fitness. In line with National Curriculum expectations, all pupils receive a minimum of two hours of PE per week.

The programme incorporates a range of sports including:

  • Dance, using a range of movement patterns which is linked to the E3L Curriculum.
  • Gymnastics, Pilates and Boxercise to develop technique, flexibility, control, strength and balance.
  • Athletics, with a focus on running, jumping and throwing and achieving their personal best.
  • Tennis, Badminton, Cricket, Rounders, Netball, Basketball and Football, with a focus on developing throwing and catching skills, hand-eye co-ordination, teamwork, communication and developing strategies for attacking and defending in competitive situations.

In addition to our taught PE lessons, children have many opportunities to take part in a wealth of physical activities at after school clubs and during enrichment sessions. These activities include yoga, dance, cricket, football and many more! 

All pupils in KS2 also take part in swimming lessons to learn both swimming skills and water safety. The aim is for children to leave Year 6 being able to swim competently and confidently over a distance of at least 25 metres, using a range of strokes effectively [E.g., front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke] and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
