Pupils at Wednesfield Technology Primary took part in a series of activities in a week promoting Safer Internet Day, building on the school’s ongoing commitment to digital safety. Using the educational platform Purple Mash, children explored how to manage online interactions safely, identify trusted adults, and respond to digital safety scenarios.
Reception pupils also joined a cross-school quiz with other primary schools across Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust, adding collaboration and friendly competition to the day.
Now in its 23rd year, Safer Internet Day is recognised in more than 170 countries and highlights key online issues affecting children and young people. This year’s theme, ‘Smart tech, safe choice – exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’, encouraged pupils to consider how artificial intelligence shapes their digital lives.
Purple Mash, developed by UK-based educational technology company 2Simple, provides a safe and engaging platform for learning. The software combines creative tools with educational games, allowing pupils to collaborate while practising good online habits.
School Principal, Claire Keeler, said: “Technology really excites our pupils and helps spark curiosity and a love of learning. It helps them explore, create and solve problems in new ways. But it’s just as important to help them use it wisely. Our Safer Internet Week is a great reminder for our children to be safe, thoughtful and kind online, and to build the confidence with all our families to navigate the digital world as our pupils grow.”
At Wednesfield Technology Primary, technology and online safety is central to learning throughout the year. The school’s Digital Learner Framework ensures pupils develop digital literacy, technological skills, and a strong sense of online responsibility. Children regularly use technology to enhance their creativity, collaborate on projects, and solve real-world problems, while teachers balance screen-based activities with hands-on learning.
Safer Internet Day sits within this wider approach, reinforcing the skills and awareness pupils need to use technology safely, responsibly, and confidently as they progress through school and prepare for life in an increasingly digital world.
