Wednesfield pupils explore Sikhism at local Gurdwara

Year 1 pupils from Wednesfield Technology Primary visited the local Gurdwara as part of their religious education studies on Sikhism.

During the visit, pupils learned about the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture, and its central role in worship. They explored the prayer hall and observed customs such as the covering of their heads and removing their shoes, gaining a first-hand understanding of the respect shown within the faith.

The children also explored key Sikh values, including kindness, equality and respect for others. Some pupils also took part in Seva, the Sikh principle of selfless service, helping with small tasks to support the Gurdwara community and learning how helping others plays an important role in Sikh life.

Principal, Claire Keeler, said: “Religious education is about more than simply learning facts; it’s about understanding how beliefs shape people’s lives and encouraging children to reflect on their own ideas. Visiting the Gurdwara gave our pupils the opportunity to see those beliefs in action, to ask questions and understand the values that guide others. Experiences like this help children develop respect, empathy and a real sense of connection with the wider community.”

The visit formed part of the school’s wider religious education programme, which introduces pupils to a range of world faiths and beliefs. Through visits like this, children develop a deeper understanding of different cultures and traditions while recognising the shared values that bring communities together.
