Wednesfield Technology Primary Commemorates VE Day’s 80th Anniversary

Wednesfield Technology Primary marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a thoughtful blend of reflection and celebration, bringing staff and pupils together to honour the historical significance of the occasion.

The morning’s commemorations began with a two-minute silence at 11am, as pupils and staff stood united in tribute to those who fought and fell during the Second World War. The silence, observed across the school grounds, offered a poignant moment of reflection and respect.

This was followed by a special assembly, where children learned about the events of 8 May 1945 and the profound impact of VE Day. Teachers shared stories from the past, helping pupils reflect on the courage, resilience, and unity that defined those turbulent times and enabling them to connect with the experiences of those who lived through the wartime era.

To conclude the day, a small outdoor tea party was held, where children enjoyed a selection of snacks and refreshments in the fresh air. The atmosphere was lively and festive, with pupils dressed in red, white, and blue, enjoying the sounds of 1940s music in the background.

Kirsty Cole, Assistant Principal at Wednesfield Technology Primary, commented: “It’s vital that our children understand the immense sacrifices made by so many to secure the freedoms we often take for granted today. By commemorating VE Day in this way, we not only help them appreciate the historical significance of that moment but also instil a sense of gratitude for the peace and unity that followed.

“Days like today remind us of the resilience, bravery, and selflessness that shaped our world. It was a truly meaningful day for both pupils and staff, as we came together to reflect on the past and celebrate the enduring values of community and peace.”

The 80th anniversary of VE Day provided a significant opportunity for pupils to learn, remember, and recognise the sacrifices made by those who came before them. As the school year continues, the lessons of resilience, unity, and gratitude celebrated today will undoubtedly stay with the children, shaping their understanding of both the past and their role in building a better future.
